Position Summary

The Extension Range Management Specialist is a faculty member of the Extension Animal Sciences and Natural Resources Department and conducts Extension educational programs in range resource management in collaboration with county extension faculty and other state extension specialists.
The successful candidate will:
• Work collectively in situations that engage the range livestock industry and government land management agencies.
• Serve as member on inter-disciplinary team (Range Improvement Task Force; FTE 0.25); responsibilities involve working with inter-disciplinary team of scientists to address natural resource management challenges statewide, and responding to ranchers/landowners, local governments, and state and federal agency personnel.
• Seek extramural funding.
• Share responsibilities for Extension education in the overall rangeland brush/weed educational programs.
• Develop materials, teaching aids, methods and techniques for educational programs for off-campus educational programming.
• Prepare peer reviewed publications and participate in educational programming delivery systems.
• Work with State 4-H and FFA programs as a team member in youth programs related to rangeland management; develop literature; assist with leader training.
• Maintain liaison with industry, statewide organizations and agencies and other agriculture groups related to rangeland management.
• Work closely and coordinate own work with other Extension specialists, NMSU faculty and county Extension personnel in developing, implementing and evaluating rangeland programs.
• Provide technical support and in-service training to county Extension faculty and staff.
• Actively participate in Department activities by attending departmental meetings and serving on appropriate committees.
• Other responsibilities as agreed to with the department head of Extension Animal Sciences and Natural Resources.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. (in hand by hire date) in natural resources related area with an extensive knowledge of grazing and vegetation management.
• A high level of collegiality and a desire to work with other specialists and scientists in an interdisciplinary effort is required.
• Ability to interpret and make practical applications of current range management research findings on western rangelands; work with other faculty and staff; work as a team member; work cooperatively with livestock producers, government agencies, and environmental interests; communicate effectively, both in writing and orally, with individuals and groups.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally and in writing to a diverse clientele, including livestock producers, governmental agencies, youth, conservation groups and other users of rangeland resources.
• Potential for excellence in extension, outreach and obtaining extramural funding.
• Knowledge of New Mexico’s rangelands, other natural resources, its people, and culture.

Preferred Qualifications (optional)

•Experience in working in Cooperative Extension and the Land Grant University System is preferred.
•Experience and/or education in ecology and management of western rangelands preferred.

Special Requirements of the Position

Candidate must be willing to work odd hours as needed.
Located in Las Cruces, NM at the main campus of New Mexico State University but requires extensive travel with state-wide responsibilities.
