Dona Ana Community College (DACC) is a comprehensive, learning-centered community college dedicated to a diverse population of learners in support of student success, workforce and economic development and lifelong learning. Established in 1973 at the request of the Gadsden, Hatch and Las Cruces school boards, DACC continues to meet the educational needs of county residents by providing instruction leading to associate degrees and technical certificates as well as community and adult education opportunities. As the second largest community college in the state, DACC offers accessible and affordable higher education opportunities to more than 18,000 students annually with eight learning sites county-wide. As part of New Mexico State University, DACC is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The purpose of this position is to increase our retention and recruitment efforts. The most critical role of this position will be to assist with default prevention and education. As the Financial Aid Outreach Advisor, this employee would be charged primarily with educating new and current students on financial literacy and their student loan obligation.

Furthermore, this position would also coordinate other financial aid outreach efforts such as FAFSA workshops, High School Parent Nights, and support efforts aimed at reducing DACC’s student loan default rate.

In addition, this position would work close with students and parents in educating them on financial aid and scholarships.

Required Education

Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

No previous work experience required.

Classification Summary

Provides personal and financial aid application counseling to students and parents. Assists in the administration of the financial aid program. Makes decisions to award funds to students eligible for scholarships, grants, and college work-study. Responsible for auditing and reconciling financial aid accounts and packaging financial aid awards.

Classification Standard Duties

Provides advice and counsel about available financial aid opportunities, eligibility requirements and the application process to students and parents; analyzes and evaluates financial aid eligibility for students. Exercises professional judgment to determine if adjustments should be made; makes award adjustments and recalculations on less complex cases, as appropriate. Presides over the collection, management and reporting of data in accordance with the objectives of the position; participates in the development and implementation of departmental procedures, as appropriate. Conducts student orientations, entrance and exit interviews in accordance with federal, university and agency guidelines. Reviews loan related financial documents for accuracy and provides signature approval/disapproval. Responds to inquiries by researching and resolving problems related to transactions handled by the department; serves as liaison with other departments in the resolution of day-to-day administrative or operational issues; provides crisis intervention referrals, as appropriate. Coordinates one or more specific administrative programs or service areas, as assigned. Participates in the review and adjudication of appeals for scholarships and academic progress. May oversee activities of staff and/or student support. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge

Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures. Knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, and policies pertaining to the provision of student financial aid. Knowledge of financial aid policies, procedures, and eligibility requirements.

Skills

Interviewing skills. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

Abilities

Ability to analyze and solve problems. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to lead and functionally supervise staff. Ability to make evaluative judgments. Ability to present educational programs, workshops and/or orientations.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Environment Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
Physical Effort Light physical effort. Effort applies to no more than two (2) hours per day.
