General Information of Campus and Unit

The Land-Potential Knowledge System (LandPKS) is a USAID-funded project managed by the USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range at New Mexico State University (Las Cruces, NM, USA) designed to globalize local and scientific knowledge on land potential. LandPKS uses mobile phone and cloud computing technologies to provide point-level estimates of land productivity, degradation resistance, and resilience. It will also connect people with similar types of lands and challenges, public and private, with each other. Initial pilot sites for this global project are located in eastern and southern Africa.

Position Summary

We are currently searching for a PhD in soil science, agronomy, geography, landscape ecology or a related field to focus on developing next generation decision support tools for sustainable land use planning and management. Responsibilities for this position will include: developing the next generation of land use planning and management decision support tools; integrating results of simulation models with relevant geospatial data sets and other sources of soil-specific knowledge and information; helping to validate model results; and quantifying uncertainty levels of predictions. The individual will also contribute to the overall development of this rapidly growing project as part of the management team and will be expected to help identify new national and global partners interested in working with us.
This is a 12 month, contingent upon funding, non-tenure track position.

Required Qualifications

PhD in soil science, agronomy, geography, environmental science, landscape ecology, agricultural modeling or a related field.
- Knowledge and understanding of land use, land degradation, and plant growth requirements.
- Experience with GIS software and datasets.
- International experience.
- Ideal candidate will be able to succeed as both a self-motivated researcher and a member of an interdisciplinary team.

Special Requirements of the Position

Ability and willingness to travel internationally up to 1 month per year, as necessary, to work with collaborators.
